The University of Greenwich was founded in 1890 as Woolwich Polytechnic, the second polytechnic in England. It was founded by Frank Didden. In 1992, the government awarded university status to Thames Polytechnic and renamed it the University of Greenwich in 1993. On 1 January 1993, the Thames College of Health Care Studies, which itself was formed from the merger of three local schools of nursing and midwifery, formally merged with the newly designated University of Greenwich and became a full faculty of the university.

In 2001, the university relocated from its historic main campus in the Bathway Quarter area of Woolwich to its current site in Avery Hill, Greenwich.
