History of Newcastle University

The history of Newcastle University can be traced back to 1834 with the establishment of the School of Medicine and Surgery. In 1871, the Armstrong College was founded. In 1937, these two colleges merged to form King's College, as part of the federal University of Durham. The Durham colleges were the other part of the federal university.

King's College was known for providing instruction in basic subjects such as mathematics, science, arts, and literature. It was also recognized as a leader in regional applied sciences such as geology, mining, naval architecture, engineering, and agriculture.

During this time, Newcastle was known as a center of industrial activity. Having a strong civic university as an intellectual base helped Newcastle gain international recognition.

In 1963, the federal university was dissolved and King's College became Newcastle University as it is known today.
