History of Surrey University
The University of Surrey was founded on 9 September 1966 by Royal Charter, but its roots go back to the late 19th century and a concern to provide wider access to higher education for the poorer inhabitants of London.
Since its foundation in the 1960s, and before that as Battersea College, the University has grown and flourished through strong links and collaboration with the outside world. We have built close partnerships with other institutions and businesses, reached across geographical boundaries, and used these relationships to realize potential.
The University Archives provides information about the history and organization of the University, records its policies and decisions, shows what the University has done and why, how it has been organized and run, and demonstrates its impact on the wider community.
The University Archives was established by decision of the University Senate on 7 February 1984. It is the official repository for the historical records of the University of Surrey.
These records date back to the foundation of Battersea Polytechnic in 1891. We collect current publications, as well as minutes and other papers.
