Vanier Canada Scholarship Acceptance Criteria

The following is a list of the eligibility requirements for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship:

  1. A proficient level in English is required.
  2. Citizens of Eligible Countries: Permanent Residents of Canada, Citizens of Canada, and Citizens of Countries That Are Not Canada
  3. You should be enrolled in a programme leading to your first doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate and graduate research programmes such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., and JD/Ph.D. – if there is a significant research component). Please be aware that financial support is only offered for the Ph.D. component of combined degrees;
  4. By the time May 1, 2023 rolls around, you must not have completed more than twenty months of doctoral studies.
  5. You are only eligible to be nominated for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship by a single institution in Canada that is allotted a quota for the programme.
  6. You are required to have achieved a grade point average of at least 4.0 in each of the two most recent years of full-time study or the equivalent, as determined by your educational institution. Candidates are strongly encouraged to get in touch with the organisation in order to find out what the institution considers to be an A-average.

  1. You can apply in one of two different ways. Either the student notifies the graduate studies faculty at the chosen institution of his or her intention to apply to the Vanier CGS programme, or the student submits an application to the Vanier CGS programme online.
  2. The organisation will start the process of nomination by making initial contact with the candidate of choice.
  3. The student prepares their application and sends it to the institution that is doing the nominating using the ResearchNet application system by the deadline that is set by the institution (as set in ResearchNet by the nominating institution).
  4. The internal selection of candidates is handled by the institution that is doing the nominating.
  5. The nominating institution is responsible for sending recommended nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (hereinafter referred to as the Secretariat) by the 1st of November in 2022. (20:00 Eastern Time).
  6. The Secretariat is responsible for the coordination of the review process.
  7. The TAP Steering Committee supports and gives its approval to the final decisions made regarding the Vanier CGS programme.
  8. The results of the competition are communicated to the nominees in the month of April 2023.

The candidate needs to be put forward by the educational establishment that they are interested in attending. There is no provision for direct applications within the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) programme.

Candidates are required to confirm with the administrator of the institution that is nominating them the internal deadlines of the institution.

Important details regarding the Vanier application are as follows:

A student who has submitted the electronic application for the Vanier and study in Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) via ResearchNet is required to submit an online application to the Canadian institution that will be nominating them. You are unable to send your applications to the Vanier CGS programme in a direct manner.

Students who are interested in applying for a Vanier CGS need to check to see if the doctoral programme they are interested in enrolling in has a Vanier CGS quota before doing so. They are then required to inform the institution of their intention to be considered for a Vanier CGS scholarship. It is the responsibility of the institution to inform the candidate if their application is not selected for further consideration for nomination to the Secretariat. The notification schedule may be subject to change at the institution.

The institution will send the Secretariat its nominations according to the quota that it has been given.
There is only one nomination that can be made for each student. If a student is being considered for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship by more than one institution, the student is responsible for choosing which institution will receive their nomination. Multiple nominations are inadmissible.

It is the responsibility of the student to make contact with the educational establishment in order to obtain additional information concerning the process of selecting the appropriate federal granting agency, locating the appropriate contact person within a department or faculty, and obtaining advice or answering questions concerning the application’s content and presentation. The announcement of the winners of the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship will take place at the beginning of April 2023.
